Inflows into the Krishna rose sharply on Tuesday after heavy rain upstream, and several barrage gates at Vijayawada were lifted to release water downstream.
Residents of low-lying colonies along the river were alerted and relief camps were opened in schools. Fishermen were told not to go into the river until further notice.
The district administration said the situation was being monitored round the clock from a control room.
